The Smoky Mountain Youth Orchestra has been in existence since 2016 with three goals in mind: 1. Provide an amazing ensemble experience for string players in a low stress environment. 2. Create a space where string students throughout WNC can make connections and friendships with other kids. 3. Develop confidence to succeed in musicianship and also, more importantly, in life.
The Smoky Mountain Youth Orchestra is open to kids ages 7-18 who have been playing a string instrument for at least one year(and can read music at a basic level). We accept all string family instruments: violin, viola, cello, and bass. Occassionally, we may ask a student to switch to a different instrument so we can get a good balance within the ensemble.
SMYO performs at least once a semester but other opportunities for performance are actively sought out throughout the community. These can include festivals, nursing homes, public venues, etc.
We highly believe that SMYO is an exceptional place for any young musician to grow, both musical and as a person. The cost to participate is $55.00 a month(with a once yearly $25.00 registration fee). Scholarships are available depending on need.
